Animals in the bible A human-animal bond made in heaven Throughout the Bible, animals are accorded an exalted place in Creation. Biblical text cites God making a covenant with humans and animals after the Great Flood (“Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: ‘I now establish my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you – the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you – every living creature on earth.’”) Wording of the post-Flood covenant, includes: 1. "Then God said to Noah...I now establish My covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you--the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you-- with every living creature on earth." -- Genesis 9:8-10 2. "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature...a covenant for all generations to come." -- Genesis 9:11-13 3. "Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds I will see it and I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all living creatures of every kind." -- Genesis 9:14,15 4. "Whenever the rainbow appears I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."(Genesis 9:16) 5. "So God said to Noah, this is the sign of the covenant I have established between Me and all life on earth." -- Genesis 9:17 One of the signs of a righteous man, the Bible says, is that he takes care of his animals ("A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal.” -- Proverbs 12:10 Even the animal of an enemy was to be treated kindly: “If you come across your enemy’s ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to take it back to him” (Exodus 23:4). One reason God commanded His people to rest one day out of seven was so their animals would be refreshed. -- Exodus 23:12 The book of Revelation repeatedly places both human and nonhuman creatures around the throne of God, at a time when the Lord "shall wipe away all tears." -- Revelation 4:6-11; 5:6-14; 6:1-7

Additional references to animals

in the bible:

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all of these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. -- Job 12: 7-12 "Be glad, earth and sky! Roar sea and every creature in you: be glad fields and everything in you! The trees in the woods will shout for joy." Psalm 96:11, 12 "Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight." -- Luke 12:6; cf. Matthew 10:29 “This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head." Ephesians 1:10 “And the wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed, their young ones shall lie down together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice's den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.:  -- Isaiah 11:6-9 "In that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the creatures that move along the ground. Bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land, so that all may lie down in safety."  -- Hosea 2:18
